THE MINISTER of Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Blade Nzimande, and the Minister of Tourism, Patricia de Lille, will unveil the country’s astro-tourism strategy at Carnarvon Primary School in the Northern Cape on September 27.

A spokesperson for the Department of Science and Innovation, Veronica Mohapeloa, said the strategy, which is yet to be approved by the Cabinet, is set to place the Northern Cape as the hub of astro-tourism in South Africa and showcase the vast beauty of the Karoo alongside groundbreaking astronomical developments.

“A collaboration between the Department of Science and Innovation and the Department of Tourism, the strategy is expected to boost economic growth in the area by encouraging tourism,” said Mohapeloa.

“The vastness of the Karoo and its location away from noise and light pollution make the area a prime spot for the study of celestial bodies and events.”

She added that the launch event coincided with World Tourism Day, which is celebrated annually as part of Tourism Month in South Africa.
