Hundreds of packets of brightly coloured powder were at the ready. These packets soon added a vibrant twist to the morning’s festivities as the brightly coloured dust was generously “distributed” over all the competitors.
This past Saturday, early on a very chilly morning, a sobering reminder that it was the last day of winter, the area in front of the Suzuki Stadium was a hive of activity with the excited chitter-chatter and sounds of shuffling feet as families, young and old, gathered for the 2024 Sol Plaatje University Birthday Colour Run.
Soon the rhythmic beat of running shoes hitting the tar signalled that the 2024 Colour Run was under way, and the event proved to be a resounding success.
According to Mosima Mehlape, Manager for Communications and Marketing in the Department of Institutional Advancements, more than 630 participants, from across the province and beyond, braved the cold to participate in the 5km, 10km, and half marathon (21.1km) events. “It is not our university; it is your university,” Mehlape emphasised, underscoring SPU’s commitment to its community.
But what would a Colour Run be without the colour? Hundreds of packets of brightly coloured powder were at the ready. These packets soon added a vibrant twist to the morning’s festivities as the brightly coloured dust was generously “distributed” over all the competitors.
Meanwhile, keeping the crowd engaged and spirits high were Jerry Kale, a Comrades Marathon bronze medallist, and Nobulali Mathimba, faculty registrar in the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences at SPU.
With their infectious enthusiasm, they ensured runners were informed and motivated as they prepared for the races ahead. The routes were clearly announced before each race, so everyone knew exactly where they were headed.
At 6.30am, with a resounding bang, the 21.1km runners were off. Their route led them past the Diamond Pavilion Mall, along Landbou Road, around the circles, and past the prison before looping back to Suzuki Park.
By 7am, the 10km runners hit the road, followed at 7.30am by those tackling the 5km course.
As runners made their way along the routes, they were peppered with bursts of coloured powder at various checkpoints. Puffs of paint filled the air, creating a kaleidoscope of hues that added life and energy to the event, perfectly capturing the spirit of the colour run.
This year’s event was further enhanced by the introduction of SPU’s Decade Celebration apparel, available for purchase alongside offerings from various vendors. These vendors and sponsors played a crucial role in the day’s success, contributing to a festive atmosphere that was enjoyed by all. The energy and support along the route was palpable, giving runners that extra boost as they navigated the course.
Eventually, runners began streaming into the finish line area. Those who completed their race crossed the finish line to cheers and applause, proudly receiving their medals – and, for the fastest runners, there was a cash prize as well.
The 2024 SPU Birthday Colour Run was more than just a race. It was a celebration of community, health, and the deep connection between Sol Plaatje University and the people of Kimberley.
This event not only promoted healthy living but also reinforced SPU’s role as a torchbearer, and a vital source of hope for the region.
