JUST IN: The 2020 school year is set to resume on June 1

This date coincides with the easing of lockdown Levels from 4 to 3.

Durban – The 2020 school year is set to resume on June 1.

Addressing the country on Tuesday, Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga said the department had received reports that orders for PPE had been ordered and have arrived at schools. This included hand sanitisers and masks. 

She explained that this will be done in a phased approach. 

School Management Teams and teachers are expected to go back to school later this month. The Minister clarified that both Independent and public schools will be opened from June 1.

Grade 7 and 12 pupils will go back to school as per the first phase of the department’s strategy. 

The Minister noted that the lockdown had created unprecedented anxiety and pressure. 

She said support will be provided to pupils. Motshekga said psychologists and social workers will work with schools. 

Motshekga said the revised school calendar will be revised and the Department will work with each province to ensure that no school is left behind. 

The Minister said the department is working to include pupils with special needs.
