THE JOHN Taolo Gaetsewe (JTG) district police hosted a Sports Against Crime event at the Kathu Sishen sports ground on Saturday.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam said the event was held under the theme “Let’s build an active generation that is free of drugs, teen pregnancies and GBVF (gender-based violence and femicide)”.

It was organised in partnership with the JTG Community Police Forum, the NC Youth Crime Prevention Desk, the Community in Blue Safety Patrollers, Love Life NGO, the Hawks, the Department of Transport, Safety and Liason, the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, Anglo American, the Kathu UGM Wellness Clinic and Gamagara Local Municipality.

The sports day unfolded in three phases – a health walk against GBVF, messages of support by stakeholders and sporting activities.

The provincial head for pro-active policing, Brigadier Irene Kopeledi, addressed the event and encouraged the youth to empower each other through preventative engagements and to be active in sport to avoid getting involved in crime.

Six soccer and two netball teams participated in the sports events and spectators utilised the services offered at the different stalls, including information sessions on sexual and reproductive health and TB, STI, pap smear and sugar diabetes screening as well as information leaflets on GBVF and human trafficking.

Kopeledi thanked the teams for their participation and for displaying their talents as part of efforts to ensure an active generation that is free of drugs, teenage pregnancies and GBVF.
