AN INMATE died at Kimberley Correctional Centre under mysterious circumstances and sources believe that his death is being “covered up”.
Sources said that the incident took place during the early hours of May 13, after which inmates were locked up at around 2pm that afternoon.
The sources indicated that the deceased was placed in a communal cell with around 30 other inmates, however, no one had any knowledge about his death as they presumed that he was not feeling well.
It was reported that the deceased was allegedly raped and choked to death.
Department of Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo stated that the deceased became ill and was vomiting on May 10.
“At about 9pm, the patient was treated but became unresponsive. At about 10.20pm, the professional and the doctor declared that the patient had no vitals, no pulse or respirations, no heart sounds and dilated. The mouth was covered in dry yellow vomit. There were no visible injuries or wounds noted on the patient,” said Nxumalo.
He indicated that the patient was declared dead at 10.25pm.
