HISTORY was made in Kimberley when more than 800 walkers from all walks of life, including community members and Sol Plaatje University (SPU) staff and students, joined forces on July 22 to take part in SPU’s inaugural Community Big Walk.

Despite the morning chill, the atmosphere was brimming with enthusiasm as participants eagerly gathered for the 4.9-kilometre fun walk, an event that held significant meaning for the community.

Leading the occasion was Professor Andrew Crouch, the vice-chancellor and principal of SPU, who extended a warm welcome to everyone and expressed his gratitude for the remarkable turnout.

The impressive numbers demonstrated a sense of unity and backing for this initiative. Crouch also took a moment to acknowledge the event’s organisers, partners and sponsors, whose contributions played a crucial role in ensuring the success of the Big Walk.

“This is the first-ever SPU Community Big Walk and we aim to make it an annual tradition, growing bigger with each passing year. The proceeds from this event will be dedicated to supporting students’ mental and health programmes. As we approach SPU’s 10th anniversary in August, we celebrate our decade of existence alongside all of you,” said Crouch.

At the core of SPU’s fifth strategic goal lies the objective to foster meaningful connections within the community, build sustainable relationships and inspire a profound sense of pride and hope in Kimberley and the Northern Cape region at large.

Walking, being an easily accessible form of exercise, promotes holistic well-being while fostering emotional and social connections. During the Big Walk, participants had the unique opportunity to explore all of SPU’s campuses and activities, enhancing camaraderie and enjoyment throughout the day.

From exciting chances to win cash and prizes totalling R10,000 to indulging in the attractions at a vibrant flea market and engaging in various children’s activities like jumping castles, rope skipping and pony rides, there was something to delight every attendee.

In the words of Crouch, “Thank you for your unwavering support for SPU and this Community Big Walk. Your participation is an investment in the future of Kimberley and our beloved country.”
