Esel was handed a life sentence for rape, another life sentence for murder and an additional 17 years for attempted rape and violation of a corpse
ALTHOUGH the elderly relative who Jacob Esel attempted to rape was happy about the sentence he received in the Northern Cape High Court yesterday, she said it still hurt.
“He is my family. I never expected him to do something like this. I’m relieved that it is all over now and he got his just deserts. I don’t want him near me.”
Esel was handed a life sentence for rape, another life sentence for murder and an additional 17 years for attempted rape and violation of a corpse.
The elderly relative said that she at least felt safer now.
Meanwhile, a close family friend said yesterday that Esel “was just a nasty human being”.
“We are happy he is not going to be returning to the community. If he does, we will kill him.”
The investigating officers, detective sergeants Kgositsile Israel Taolo and Lesego Cynthia Oliphant, were happy that justice had been served. “We worked day and night from February 2018 to ensure we secured a successful prosecution.”
The two said they couldn’t have done it without the mentorship of “our” prosecutor. “If it wasn’t for all the assistance we received from James Dada we would not have had a successful prosecution.”
They say they also learnt a lot from the case. “We just went back to basics and followed the police mandate.
“We are also happy for what we did for the community. We hope today’s outcome will serve as a deterrent for others.”
