VERY cold temperatures can be expected over the next few days as a cold front sweeps through the country with the possibility of snowfalls predicted in Sutherland and Calvinia.

The South African Weather Service has issued a warning for strong, damaging winds in the Karoo and Sutherland.

Veld fire alerts were issued for Postmasburg, De Aar, Kathu, Warrenton, Augrabies Falls, Hopetown, Hotazel, Victoria West, Kimberley, Danielskuil, Renosterberg, Noupoort, Jan Kempdorp, Barkly West, Twee Rivieren, Petrusville, Prieska, Groblershoop, Upington, Noupoort, Kuruman, Van Wyksvlei, Griekwastad on Monday.

The temperature in the city will plummet to -1 degrees Celsius and a maximum temperature of 12 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.

Temperatures will recover slightly on Friday with a low of zero degrees reaching a high of 20 degrees Celsius.

Sutherland will experience bitterly cold temperatures where it will be -6 degrees Celsius on Wednesday rising to a mere 5 degrees Celsius during the day.

On Thursday it is predicted to be an icy -7 degrees Celsius with a maximum of 9 degrees Celsius.
