NO INJURIES were reported to what was regarded as a hostage situation at the new CRU flats on Tuesday night. Unhappy community members locked the gates, preventing Municipal officials from leaving the meeting.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Mashay Gamieldien, said a case docket will be registered.

Gamieldien said the situation unfolded earlier on Tuesday evening at approximately 19:30 at the Lerato Park Community Hall in Roodepan.

“It was alleged that the CFO and the Speaker of the Sol Plaatje Municipality were addressing community members when they were unhappy with the feedback provided,” said Gamieldien.

Only the Speaker, N Maputle, the CFO, Z Thekisho, some officials and councillors were held hostage. The Executive Mayor, Kagiso Sonyoni, was not present at that meeting.

Gamieldien said the disgruntled community members then locked the gates preventing the CFO and the Speaker from leaving.

“After successful negotiations, they were released and the situation was diffused,” said Gamieldien.
