RESIDENTS in Boikanyo Street in Galeshewe were woken at around 2am yesterday morning by water gushing into their homes after a water pipe burst in Seleke Street.

One of the residents, Lettie Motebe, said that this was the second time that her home has been damaged by water after the pipe burst.

“The last time the same pipe burst in the same street. The pipe was replaced but it has burst again at the same place. The municipality fixed it this afternoon but we do not know for how long before our homes will be flooded again,” said Motebe yesterday.

She said that she was asleep when her neighbour, whose home was also flooded, woke her up.

“By that time the water was already ankle deep. My bedroom, sitting room and kitchen were flooded while two of my other neighbours’ entire homes and yards were flooded.”

Residents are apparently still struggling to receive payouts for the first claims for damages that were lodged in 2007.

Motebe added that she would have to put in a claim for a new bedroom suite, kitchen unit, room divider, fridge and stove, which she said were all damaged when her home flooded.

“I do not have insurance. I never slept a wink as I was busy mopping up the water and trying to take all my furniture out of the house.”

Spokesperson for Sol Plaatje Municipality, Sello Matsie, regretted the incident and said that the residents were welcome to put in a claim for damages at the municipality.
