SOL PLAATJE executive mayor Kagisho Sonyoni approved the 2022/’23 annual budget during a special council meeting on June 7.
Council however has amended the electricity tariff that was initially proposed at a 6,82 percent and has instead approved a 4,5 percent increase.
Consumers will be billed a basic, demand and capacity charge as from July 1, where indigents will be exempted.
It was disputed that the municipality is charging a 121 percent mark-up on the sale of electricity.
The general manager for the budget and treasury office Oubaas Wagner has been appointed as the acting chief financial officer (CFO) at Sol Plaatje municipality.
This follows after the South African Local Government Association (Salga) advised that the post of the acting municipal manager Lydia Thekisho who is also the chief financial officer, should be rescinded after the ACDP requested an investigation.
It was indicated that an active CFO was ineligible to act as a municipal manager.
The annual 2022/’23 budget.and following increases have been approved
Electricity 4, 5 percent
Water 4 percent
Sanitation 4 percent
Sewerage 4 percent
Rates 4 percent
