Six suspects arrested for theft of state property, police recover goods valued at about R100 000
A GENERAL worker at the Department of Health in Upington was arrested together with five security officials for theft of state property on Sunday.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Omphile Masegela said on Monday that the police had received information about cleaning materials and other items that had allegedly been removed from the premises of the Department of Health without a removal order.
“It was alleged that the suspects shared the stolen items amongst themselves while more items were being kept at one of their residences for further distribution,” Masegela said.
He added that the information was operationalised with assistance from the security company personnel and the houses were searched.
“The police recovered items including protective and cleaning materials and among others a television set and air conditioner belonging to the Department of Health. The estimated value of the goods is R100 000.”
The six suspects, who are between the ages of 30 and 51 years, are expected to appear in the Upington Magistrate’s Court soon.
“The Acting District Commissioner of ZF Mgcawu, Brigadier Sampie Koopman, lauded the police members for the swift response and stated that actions of this nature by those who are supposed to protect the properties of the state would be decisively dealt with.”
