Hawks swoop on suspects for unlicensed firearm, fraud

A man who was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition is expected to appear in the Galeshewe Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for a formal bail application.

AN ACCUSED who was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition is expected to appear in the Galeshewe Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for a formal bail application.

The accused, Oreeditse Kebotlhale, 51, was arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit in Phutanang.

Hawks provincial spokesperson Captain Tebogo Thebe said Kebotlhale’s property was searched in his presence and the police recovered a 9mm Taurus pistol, three magazines and ammunition.

“The accused appeared in court on February 17 where he was remanded in custody. The investigation continues.”

Thebe added that the Kimberley Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit arrested a 47-year-old woman after she allegedly defrauded her employer – Rossburg Enterprise.

He said the accused, Latiefa De Saldanha, was granted bail of R4,000 after she appeared in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on February 17 on charges of fraud and money laundering.

“The allegations emerged that during December 2017 and July 2018, while the accused was employed in the finance section, she allegedly unlawfully and intentionally defrauded Rossburg Enterprise. Her employers were prejudiced an amount of R220,345 in cash.”

Thebe stated that the accused was charged with 248 counts of fraud, alternatively theft and 245 counts of money laundering.

“The case was remanded until March 1 to allow the accused to obtain legal assistance.”
