A 57-YEAR-old suspect is expected to appear before the Upington Magistrate’s Court on Thursday for his alleged involvement in a cash-in-transit robbery.

According to national police spokesperson Colonel Athlenda Mathe, five armed men robbed a cash-in-transit van of more than R4 million during the incident near the Kalahari Mall in Upington on Tuesday.

Hawks Northern Cape provincial spokesperson Nomthandazo Mnisi said on Wednesday that two security guards were loading cash at an ATM at the Kalahari Mall when five unknown suspects held them at gunpoint.

“The suspects fled with two cellphones, two handguns and an undisclosed amount of money,” said Mnisi.

She added that a suspect was arrested by the Hawks on Wednesday.

“Leads are being followed regarding the arrest of more suspects,” said Mnisi.
