THE HAWKS’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team arrested a 38-year-old suspect for allegedly defrauding a claimant of R850,000 that should have been paid into the Guardian Fund.

Hawks Northern Cape provincial spokesperson Nomthandazo Mnisi said the suspect pretended to be an attorney and assisted a complainant to complete documents for submission to the Master of the High Court in Kimberley in respect of a Guardian Fund claim in 2017.

“The suspect allegedly requested the complainant to transfer all the money into his personal bank account so that he could invest it on her behalf. The unsuspecting victim co-operated and that was the last she saw of her money, amounting to R850,000,” said Mnisi.

She added that the suspect was arrested in Atteridgeville, Pretoria on charges of fraud and theft on Friday.

“He is expected to make a first appearance in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on Monday, April 26.”
