A 61-YEAR-old Northern Cape woman is expected to appear before the Upington Magistrate’s Court on Monday for allegedly running a loan shark business.

The suspect was arrested on Friday by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit following a tip-off.

Hawks Northern Cape spokesperson, Nomthandazo Mnisi, said that they received information about a suspect who was reportedly in possession of SA Social Security Agency (Sassa) grant cards and identity documents belonging to community members in Upington.

“A search and seizure operation was conducted and four Sassa cards, 12 bank cards, 15 identity documents and two EasyPay cards were confiscated,” said Mnisi.

“The investigation has revealed that these items were unlawfully kept by the suspect to guarantee payments for illegally advanced loans, which is in contravention of the National Credit Act.”
