A 35-YEAR-OLD man, Tshepiso Dikgopo, was sentenced to eight years in prison by the Hartswater Regional Court after being found guilty of the attempted murder of the mother of his five children.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock stated that four years of the sentence were suspended for five years, on the condition that the Dikgopo is not convicted of a similar crime during this period.

“On Saturday, March 11, 2023, at about 8.30pm, the victim and her life partner were in an altercation and he severely assaulted her and stabbed her before leaving her for dead at their house in Hartswater. The victim regained consciousness and managed to seek assistance from neighbours and was transported to hospital for medical treatment. The accused was arrested and found guilty on a charge of attempted murder. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm,’ said Kock.

He added that the investigating officer was praised for his part in securing the conviction.

“The provincial commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lieutenant-Koliswa Otola, commended Detective Sergeant Sidwell Destile of the Hartswater SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit for his meticulous investigation that led to the GBVF sentence,” said Kock.

“The police encourage the community to participate in the ‘Rate Our Service’ online survey and assist the police in improving our services to the public, as well as to report criminal behaviour via the MySAPS app or on 08600 10111. All information will be treated confidently,” he added.
