A Galeshewe rapist who was stabbed in the genital area by his victim was sentenced to 18 years in prison.
THE SAPS management in the Northern Cape has lauded the 18-year sentence handed down to 30-year-old Gert Kock for the rape of a 24-year-old woman in Galeshewe.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock recounted the harrowing details of the crime. On the morning of March 15, 2021, at around 9am, the young woman was on her way to work when she took a shortcut behind the provincial legislature building in Galeshewe. It was here that the assailant ambushed her, brandishing a knife, and forcefully dragged her into the nearby veld, where he raped her several times.
Despite the terrifying ordeal, the victim courageously fought back, managing to stab her attacker in the genital area with a broken bottle. This allowed her to escape and report the crime to the police.
Following a lengthy investigation, Kock was finally apprehended on December 7, 2021, in the Kimberley central business district.
On August 19, 2024, justice was served when Kock was found guilty and sentenced to 18 years in prison by the Galeshewe Sexual Offences Court.
The acting provincial commissioner of the SAPS in the Northern Cape, Major-General Luntu Ngubelanga, praised Detective Warrant Officer Daniel Satisfied of the Galeshewe Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit for his meticulous work.
He also commended the National Prosecuting Authority for their collaboration in securing this significant GBVF sentence, especially as the nation observes Women’s Month.
