Galeshewe man dies in shanty fire, eight-year-old son taken to hospital

The Galeshewe police have opened an inquest docket after a 40-year-old man died in a shanty fire.

THE POLICE in Galeshewe have opened an inquest into the death of a 40-year-old man who died in a shanty fire on March 11.

The deceased was inside his shanty in Marikana informal settlement in Galeshewe with his eight-year-old son at the time of the incident.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam said preliminary investigations indicated that the shack caught fire while they were asleep, at around 10pm.

“The deceased was declared dead on the scene by the Kimberley Emergency Services. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death. His son was transported to Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital for medical treatment,” said Sam.

He added that the police were investigating the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident.
