The Galeshewe Library was ransacked during a break-in that took place on the weekend.
THE ALARM system at the Galeshewe Library was stolen, along with all the keys, four computers and a laptop, during a break-in that took place on the weekend.
Windows were smashed and the pipes in the bathroom were broken, leaving the library flooded with water. The wires of the wi-fi connection were also stolen during the incident.
It appears as if the suspects gained entry to the library by removing an air conditioner from a wall.
Members of Operation Fiela retrieved a bag containing some of the stolen items, which had been dumped near the Kagisho police station.
The chairperson of Operation Fiela, Thabisho Louw, said on Monday that they were searching for the suspects.
“The suspected stolen items were burnt and thrown in the veld,” said Louw.
Sol Plaatje Municipality spokesperson Thoko Riet said they had replaced all the locks and would station security guards at the library.
“We are looking towards appointing permanent security to guard all our libraries,” said Riet.
She added that the estimated damages amounted to R350,000.
“A case of housebreaking and theft has been reported to the police. No arrests have been made yet. The destruction and theft of property is detrimental to the community and we request the assistance of the public in locating the culprits.”
Riet said that the library would reopen on Wednesday.
“It is unfortunate that pupils who wanted to visit the library to do their assignments and homework on Monday had to be turned away. We will replace the wi-fi connection.”
The Galeshewe police said they would follow up on information.
