THE INDEPENDENT Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) is investigating a fatal incident resulting from police action following a tavern robbery in Club 2000, Galeshewe, where the police fatally shot one individual and left another hospitalised.

The incident occurred on Saturday. It is believed that the police pounced on three suspects who matched the description of the men who had earlier robbed a tavern and stolen two crates of beer.

Ipid spokesperson Phaladi Shuping stated that the incident occurred at around noon after the suspects allegedly robbed Badiseng Tavern.

Shuping explained that two police officers from Kagiso police station attended to a complaint of a robbery in progress.

“Upon their arrival, they were informed that two suspects had just robbed the owner of the tavern of two cases of beer and had fled. The owner gave the descriptions of the alleged robbers,” said Shuping.

“The police officers went to look for the suspects. When the suspects noticed the police, they tried to run away but the police gave chase.

“It is further alleged that the suspects attacked the police and the police allegedly fired shots.

“One suspect died at the scene and the other was admitted to a hospital.”

The incident reportedly led to community members also attacking the police.

An eyewitness said that community members joined in when they saw the robbery suspects attacking the police.

“During that commotion, the police also managed to arrest a third suspect and put him inside the police van,” said the eyewitness.

“The community, however, released the suspect by opening the van. The suspect fled the scene.”
