A 32-YEAR-old accused who was found guilty of a string of rape, theft and housebreaking charges was handed four life sentences by the Taung Regional Court on Tuesday.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said the accused, Lebogang Nyoka, 32, broke into a house where a 64-year-old woman and a 12-year-old girl were sleeping in Pampierstad on September 14, 2014.

“The accused broke into their house, raped them and fled with a laptop from the premises,” said Kock.

“The following evening Nyoka broke into a another house in Pampierstad, where he raped a 40-year-old woman and fled with a television set.

“The accused broke into a third house on October 7, 2014 and was arrested.”

Kock added that the police noticed similarities in the modus operandi of the cases and linked Nyoka to the offences through DNA.

“Nyoka was found guilty on the rapes and housebreaking and theft cases and received four life sentences. The court added another 13 years imprisonment, which will run concurrently with the life sentences.”

The acting deputy provincial commissioner for Crime Detection, Brigadier Nicky Mills, commended the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Gloria Sehako from the Jan Kempdorp SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit, for “meticulously investigating the cases and ensuring that no impunity was granted to perpetrators of such heinous crimes”.

“The SAPS will continue unabatedly and stay focused on crimes against women and children as this is one of our priorities, especially as we are celebrating Women’s Month.”
