ACADEMIC and operational activities will continue at Sol Plaatje University despite four Covid-19 cases being reported.

Chief of staff at the office of the vice-chancellor Kashini Maistry said on Sunday that Sol Plaatje University (SPU) had been fortunate to escape high levels of infection in the past.

“We will continue our efforts in this regard as the country enters its fifth wave of the pandemic,” said Maistry.

She indicated that three staff members and one student body member had tested positive.

“The staff who are ill are isolating and recovering at home. The affected student has been moved to an off-campus isolation facility and will receive medical care while recovering.

“The close contacts of that student have been isolated in their student residences and will receive their meals in their rooms until we receive the results of their Covid-19 tests. We will then decide on the best course of action for all concerned and the SPU community.”

Maistry added that the academic and operational activities of the university would continue as planned.

“Where meetings or lectures can take place online that is the preferred mode of engagement at the moment.”

She urged any staff member or student who had not been vaccinated to do so.
