FOUR men were arrested by the Pofadder police after 1,596 protected plants with an estimated street value of more than R100,000 were found in their possession.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said the men were arrested after police members followed up on information received about a suspicious-looking vehicle travelling just outside of Pofadder.

“The incident happened on January 12, 2022, at about 4am. The plants are protected under the Nature Conservation Act 9/2009 and have an approximate street value of about R110,000,” said Kock.

“The police also confiscated a Toyota double-cab bakkie as it was allegedly utilised in the commission of a crime.”

Kock added that the men, aged between 21 and 34 years old, are expected to appear in the Pofadder Magistrate’s Court soon.

“The investigation continues.”
