Four arrested for being in possession of abalone without a permit

FOUR accused Emelio Saal, 29, Keith Saal, 34, Conwald Wyngaard, 37 and Hubert Felix, 39 appeared before the Springbok Magistrate’s Court on August 18 after they were found in possession of abalone without a permit.

Hawks provincial spokesperson Captain Tebogo Thebe said the accused were arrested by the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation team based in Springbok working together with local K9 unit and Department of Environmental Affairs officials on August 16.

“Police followed up on information after four men who were observed diving into the sea at Kleinsee village on the West Coast of the Northern Cape province. Four diving suits and a bag containing 30 units of abalone with at estimated street value of R84,000 was found at the scene. The team further seized a vehicle that was used in the commission of the crime.”

He stated that the accused appeared in court where the case was postponed until August 22 for the case to be transferred to Port Nolloth court and a formal bail application.
