A former traffic official from Emthanjeni Local Municipality was sentenced after being found guilty of fraud and authorising the issuing of a driving licence without testing the applicant.

A FORMER municipal traffic official from Emthanjeni Local Municipality was sentenced to two years’ direct imprisonment with an option of a fine of R12,000, plus 12 months’ imprisonment suspended for four years, by the De Aar Magistrate’s Court.

Hawks provincial spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Tebogo Thebe said the accused, Elmarie Makemane, 47, was found guilty of fraud and authorising the issuing of a driving licence without testing the applicant as prescribed.

“The accused used her position as a traffic officer and examiner to issue a driving licence without testing the applicant. Fraud was committed when the accused used the credentials of a colleague – a cashier at the same office – to authorise the issuing without her permission,” said Thebe.

He added that Makemane was sentenced on June 19 after pleading guilty to all charges.
