MEMBERS of the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation unit based in Kimberley served court summons to two former senior officials of the Nama Khoi Municipality.
The two individuals, a 55-year-old former chief financial officer (CFO) and a 66-year-old former municipal manager, are facing allegations of contravening the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA) and obstructing or defeating the administration of justice. The summons were issued on Tuesday, August 13.
Hawks spokesperson in the Northern Cape, Lieutenant-Colonel Tebogo Thebe explained that the allegations date back to 2014 when the former municipal manager was accused of approving expenses that were not budgeted for, in violation of the MFMA.
The case was initially set for trial in 2017. However, before the trial commenced, the former CFO, who is the second accused, presented documents contradicting the charges. As a result, the prosecuting team withdrew the charges based on the information provided by the finance chief.
After a thorough investigation by the Serious Corruption Investigation team, the matter was resubmitted to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for review. The DPP’s office decided to proceed with charges against both accused.
They are scheduled to make their first court appearance on September 25 at the Springbok Magistrate’s Court.
