A FORMER Nababeep station commander, Lieutenant-Colonel Clive Bowers, was charged with theft after cash was reported missing from the safe at the police station.

It is alleged that an accused person against whom armed robbery charges were withdrawn was assisted by Bowers to reclaim the money.

The complainant struggled to get the money back and Bowers claimed that the keys to the safe where the money was kept at the police station went missing.

When the safe was broken open, it was discovered that cash amounting to R240,000, which included the complainant’s R94,000, was missing.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Mashay Gamieldien confirmed that the Provincial Anti-Corruption Investigation unit had arrested a former SAPS lieutenant-colonel on September 11 on charges of theft.

“The accused appeared in the Springbok Magistrate’s Court on September 11 and was released on bail of R2,000. The case has been postponed until October 11 for further investigation,” Gamieldien added.
