A FORMER Joe Morolong councillor, Keemenao Julia Katong, 53, was sentenced to four years imprisonment by the Kuruman Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on April 18.

Katong was found guilty of five charges of corruption in relation to a contract that was awarded to provide transport services for construction workers employed at Down Touch Investment.

Hawks provincial spokesperson Tebogo Thebe said the complainant was approached by Katong in 2019.

“She demanded vehicle tyres as a form of gratitude in order for her not to terminate the contract. The accused (Katong) demanded monthly cash payments from the complainant, who paid R14,500 to the accused in order to maintain the contract,” said Thebe.

He added that Katong threatened to terminate the contract when the complainant was unable to make further payments.

“The matter was reported to the Kimberley-based Hawks and she (Katong) was arrested during an operation by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team.”

The provincial head in the Northern Cape, Major-General Mabuela, “applauded the team for their sterling work”.
