THE FORMER municipal manager (MM) of Nama Khoi Local Municipality, Aubrey Baartman, was found guilty of contravening the Municipal Finance Management Act after he awarded a tender worth almost R80 million without following the correct tender procedure.

Hawks spokesperson in the Northern Cape, Lieutenant-Colonel Tebogo Thebe said the tender was for the supply of paver bricks and kerbs.

“Baartman and three other co-accused made numerous court appearances after being accused of fraud, which took place during June 2013 at Nama Khoi Municipality. The three other accused were acquitted on all charges. The former MM was accused of awarding a tender of R79,966,559.70. The Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team successfully investigated the matter and brought the accused before court in June 2021 after a warrant was issued for the accused to appear in court. The matter was postponed to September 14, 2023 for sentencing,” Thebe said.
