FORMER MEC for Education Gomolemo Archie Lucas, who died in the Mediclinic Gariep hospital in Kimberley on Friday morning, will receive a Special Provincial Official Funeral.

The Office of the Premier said in a statement issued yesterday that President Cyril Ramaphosa has granted the Province permission for a Special Provincial Official Funeral for Lucas.

This follows a request by the Premier of the Northern Cape, Dr Zamani Saul.

“Lucas made a valuable contribution both to the Province and the country. He started his political career at a very young age through his active participation in the Congress of South African Students (Cosas),” the statement said.

“He was also an active member of the ANC Youth League and served it loyally in various leadership capacities at local, provincial as well as national levels.

“Lucas was a member of the National Council of Provinces and was later appointed as the MEC responsible for the Department of Education, where he served the Province with distinction.”

All flags will be flown at half mast at government buildings tomorrow, the day of the funeral.

Saul will deliver the eulogy at the ceremony, which will take place at the Mittah Seperepere Convention Centre.

A memorial service for Lucas was also held yesterday at the Mayibuye Centre.
