THE FORMER mayor of Thembelihle Local Municipality, Brenda Mpanda, is expected to appear in the Hopetown Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday after she was accused of defrauding the municipality of more than R15,000 in false travel claims.

Hawks Northern Cape spokesperson Captain Tebogo Thebe said that it will be Mpamba’s second appearance in court.

“The accused is charged with two counts of fraud by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation unit. The former mayor is accused of defrauding the municipality by claiming for two trips that did not take place. The accused is alleged to have unlawfully and with intent defrauded her employer to the tune of R15,752 in false travel claims. The investigations into this matter continues,” said Thebe.
