The Kimberley Magistrate’s Court sentenced a 42-year-old former Crime Intelligence administrator to four years’ direct imprisonment for defeating the ends of justice.
THE KIMBERLEY Magistrate’s Court sentenced a 42-year-old former Crime Intelligence administrator, Christopher Sebastian Johnson, to six years’ imprisonment for defeating the ends of justice.
The court ruled on June 1 that two years will be suspended for a period of five years without the option of a fine.
The incident dates back to April 2021 when the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team conducted an operation where eight suspects were arrested in connection with drug trafficking allegations.
Following the arrests, cellphone records of the syndicate members were downloaded for further investigation.
The Hawks team discovered confidential pictures of the planned operation documents on the suspects’ cellphones.
An enquiry was opened for further investigation, which led the team to a Public Service Act (PSA) member attached to Provincial Crime Intelligence, who was later arrested.
Johnson was convicted in April 2023 after a lengthy trial.
He was dismissed from the service as a result of his conduct.
Johnson will serve four years’ direct imprisonment. He is further declared unfit to possess a firearm.
