RESIDENTS in Community Road, Florianville burnt tyres and blockaded the road again yesterday morning after their pleas to repair constant water leakages fell on deaf ears.

The residents stated that while the Sol Plaatje Municipality had delivered sand to absorb the water that had flooded their houses and yards, this remedy had not proven to be effective.

“The crèche and daycare centre has been without water since Thursday and our homes have been under water. The municipality must replace the pipes. Elderly ladies were forced to drain the water with spades and deposit the sand using wheelbarrows.”

They added that they had called off the protest after the mayor and speaker arrived to apologise for the sad state of affairs.

“The mayoral committee promised to raise the level of the pavements. They also sent in workers to dig holes in the ground and promised to get an engineer on site. While we have called off the protest for now, we are not entirely happy with the response that we have received. We are already so used to their lies and empty promises.”

Sol Plaatje Municipality office manager, George Mosimane, stated that a team from water and sanitation had been sent out to attend to the problem yesterday.

“They will compile a report into their inspection. For now, I cannot speculate what the cause of the water leaks are,” said Mosimane.
