REGISTRATION for new first-year students started at the Sol Plaatje University yesterday.

Kashini Maistry, senior manager: communication and marketing at SPU, said that an initial 400 first-entering students registered for their programmes of study yesterday and the remaining first-entering students would be registered today.

“Returning students will be registering during the course of the week.”

Maistry added that registration was fully on track and taking place in a good spirit.

“The orientation programme for first-entering students gets under way on Wednesday (tomorrow) with the official welcome ceremony scheduled for Saturday, February 2, beginning at 9am.”

According to Maistry, late applications can still be submitted. “If our entrance requirements are met and if there are places in particular programmes the application will be considered.”

She said the procession of any late registration would be done on Friday.

SPU Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Yunus Ballim, said earlier that the total student enrolment at the university was expected to grow from 1 560 last year to around 2 100 this year.

“This means that, accounting for graduates and drop-outs, we expect to have room for around 900 new students. This will include students who will join our Honours degree and postgraduate diploma programmes as the first postgraduate students at SPU.”

Ballim added that the Bachelor of Education and Heritage Studies programmes were well subscribed by applicants and it is likely that the university would fill its seats in these qualifications.

Last week, the Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Buti Manamela, visited the university to do a readiness check on arrangements for registration.
