THE FIFTEEN-year sentence handed down to a man who was found guilty of raping a four-year-old girl has been welcomed by law enforcement, with the top police official in the Northern Cape stating that the sentence sends a strong message that this type of offence will not be tolerated.

“The Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Risimati Shivuri, welcomed the sentence and lauded the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Marius Struwig, for his meticulous investigation which resulted in the sentencing of 46-year-old Paulus Hermanus de Jager,” said SAPS provincial spokesperson, Captain Olebogeng Tawana, yesterday.

Tawana said that the incident occurred in Rosedale on October 12, 2014.

“De Jager, who was a family friend at the time, entered the victim’s room and raped her. After a thorough investigation, he was arrested and charged with rape.

“He was found guilty and sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment with three years suspended for five years.
