THE KENHARDT police arrested a 31-year-old man on March 24 in connection with the murder of a two-month-old baby.
The suspect was on the run after the baby boy’s body was found in a backpack that was abandoned in the veld near Kenhardt.
The police are investigating a case of murder after the father allegedly took the baby from his mother and fled following an argument on March 9.
Following an altercation, the father reportedly took the baby boy, placed him in a backpack and left with him.
Northern Cape SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam said on Monday that the suspect was apprehended in Kenhardt by members of the public and handed over to the police.
“He has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance on April 3. The investigation continues,” said Sam.
The provincial commissioner of the SAPS in the Northern Cape, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, “applauded the community for their active participation in the search for the suspect”.
