Farmer who allegedly shot ‘friends’ gets bail

A 59-year-old man who allegedly shot two of his acquaintances at his home was granted bail of R5,000 by the Springbok District Court.

A 59-YEAR-old man who allegedly shot two of his acquaintances at his home was granted bail of R5,000 by the Springbok District Court.

Jacobus “Japie” Dawid Claassens is facing two counts of murder following the incident that occurred on October 31, 2023.

The National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson for the Northern Cape, Mojalefa Senokoatsane, said the accused handed himself over to the police after the incident.

“The accused went to the police station to report the shooting matter. When the police arrived at his home, they found two victims critical and they were rushed to Upington for medical assistance. The accused was arrested and charged with two counts of attempted murder.

“During his appearance, the two victims died and the charges were changed to murder.”

Senokoatsane added that the prosecution opposed bail.

“The bail conditions are that the accused should report to the nearest police station every Saturday. He should also not have contact with witnesses directly or indirectly, remain at his current address, and report his movements to the investigating officer if he were to leave his address within 24 hours.

“The accused also had to hand in his passport to the investigating officer. Lastly, he must not be involved in any schedule one offence. The matter was postponed to December 13 for further investigations.”
