No mercy shown to fraud accused
THE FORMER municipal manager at Karoo Hoogland Municipality, Louis Nothnagel, the former chief financial officer, Marius Botha, and a bogus company owner, Ockert Tobias Cloete, were sentenced in the Williston Regional Court on Wednesday after they were in May found guilty of fraud, corruption and money laundering.
Cloete operated a bogus company that was paid R217 152.52 by the municipality for 600 solar geysers before any services were rendered.
Spokesperson for the Hawks, Captain Philani Nkwalase, said that Botha and Cloete were each sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for corruption, four years for money laundering and two years for fraud.
“Cloete was served an additional eight years imprisonment for a separate fraud charge. All the charges will run concurrently – Botha will effectively serve five years’ imprisonment while Cloete will serve an effective eight years’ imprisonment,” said Nkwalase.
He added that Nothnagel was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment, or alternatively a R5 000 fine, for contravening the Municipal Finance Management Act, when he failed to prevent corruption and negligence.
