A 42-YEAR-old former SAPS member attached to Provincial Crime Intelligence, Sebastian Johnson, was convicted by the Kimberley Regional Court of defeating the ends of justice.

Northern Cape Hawks provincial spokesperson Captain Tebogo Thebe said that Johnson was arrested after evidence was obtained that pointed to him being a mole who worked with criminals by tipping them off about upcoming operations.

“During April 2021, the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team members conducted an operation to arrest members of a drug syndicate. After the arrests, cellphone records of the syndicate were downloaded for further investigation.

“The team discovered confidential pictures of the planned operation documents on the suspects’ cellphones. An enquiry was opened for further investigation, which led to the police member (Johnson),” said Thebe.

“The accused was convicted on April 25, 2023 following a lengthy trial. The member was dismissed from the service as a result of his conduct. The case was postponed to June 1, 2023 for sentencing.”

Thebe added that the acting provincial head, Brigadier Mojalela, commended the team “for a job well done and for their meticulous investigation into the matter”.
