THE NORTHERN Cape Department of Education has announced that enrolments for Grade R, 1 and 8 learners for the 2024 academic year will start on Monday, May 22 and run until June 22.

Department spokesperson Geoffrey van der Merwe said parents will have at least one month to ensure that they apply for placement for their children on the Online Learner Admission System.

“The department will open the 2024 online learner admissions from May 22, 2023 at 9am until midnight of June 22, 2023. The online applications are only for grades R, 1 and 8 applications. Parents and legal guardians can apply directly to schools for admission and placements for all other grades,” said Van der Merwe.

He urged parents to submit the correct documentation when applying.

“Parents can log onto the department’s Online Learner Admissions website at www.ncdoeadmissions.org to complete the application process, which consists of only three steps. A copy of the parent or legal guardian’s identity document (ID), or a sworn affidavit in a case where the parent or guardian does not have an identity document, and proof of home address, which can be in the form of a municipal account that is listed in the name of the parent or guardian, or even a legal lease agreement between the tenant and the owner of the property or the landlord, should be submitted during the application process. The learner’s birth certificate or an affidavit or a sworn statement, the clinic card and proof of immunisation for Grade R and Grade 1 applicants, and the Grade 7 learner progress report should also be submitted during the application process,” Van der Merwe said.

He added that said foreign nationals should also ensure they submit the correct documentation when applying for placement for their children.

“Non-South African citizens must be in possession of a valid learner study permit or asylum seeker or refugee permit or temporary or permanent residence issued by the Department of Home Affairs (DHA). Proof of parent or legal guardian passport or asylum seeker of refugee permit or temporary or permanent residence issued by DHA; proof of residence as well as proof of immunisation for Grade R and Grade 1 applicants and the most recent Grade 7 progress report should accompany the application.”

Van der Merwe said measures had been put in place for parents who might not have access to internet connectivity.

“We are cognisant of the fact that the Northern Cape is a rural province, where certain areas or towns are experiencing challenges in terms of internet connectivity. To mitigate these and other factors that may have an impact on the online admissions process, we identified 83 walk-in centres to assist parents and legal guardians without a device or gadget or internet connectivity to complete their application.”

Van der Merwe said certain criteria will be regarded prior to the placement of learners.

“All the applications will be considered and recommended as successful or unsuccessful applications based on whether the applicant learner already has a sibling attending the school of application in the year of submission; if the place of residence of the applicant learner is in the same suburb as the school applied to; if the place of residence of the applicant learner is adjacent to the suburb of the school applied to; and if the applicant learner’s parent/guardian is an employee at the school applied to.

“If space remains after all the above-mentioned applicants have been offered space, other applicants, in the order of the position of the application, should be recommended.

“The above-mentioned directives with regard to the criteria shall not apply to special schools, schools of skill or industrial schools.”

Van der Merwe advised parents to ensure they apply timeously and to adhere to the application process.
