AN ENGINEER who allegedly tried to kidnap and sexually assault a female police officer on May 21 will remain in custody until his next court appearance.

The accused, Titus Mofokeng, 49, appeared in the Richmond District Court on numerous charges including attempted kidnapping, sexual assault and common assault.

National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane said the the incident took place when the police officer was hitch-hiking from Richmond to Bloemfontein.

“She was offered a lift by the accused, who is an engineer working in the City of Cape Town. The accused started to attack the police officer along the way. She tried to alert passing motorists. The accused refused to allow her to get out of the car, when a motorist noticed her gesturing for help,” said Senokoatsane.

He added that the accused rammed his car against a barricade when he noticed a police roadblock that was set up in the Free State, whereupon the vehicle caught fire.

“The accused was arrested and the complainant was rescued by the police.”

Senokoatsane said that the matter was postponed until May 30 for bail information as well as possible bail application.

“The accused was remanded in custody until his next court appearance.”
