THE NORTHERN Cape provincial SAPS Task Team, together with members from the ZF Mgcawu District, delivered a blow to suspected drug dealers operating in the Upington area.

Acting on intelligence, the team conducted raids in Dakota Weg, Morning Glory and the Upington CBD on August 23, resulting in the arrest of eight suspects and the seizure of mandrax and dagga and cash believed to be proceeds of crime.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Cherelle Ehlers confirmed that the suspects, aged between 30 and 39, face various charges including drug dealing, selling liquor without a licence and illegal possession of drugs. Among those arrested, two individuals are suspected to be undocumented foreign nationals.

The operation led to the confiscation of drugs with an estimated street value of R38,100.

Colonel Ehlers emphasised the team’s ongoing commitment to combating the “scourge of drugs” in Northern Cape communities.
