THE WITDRAAI police have opened an inquest docket into the deaths of eight persons who died after a luxury holiday resort lodge in the Kalahari was engulfed in a blaze in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Amongst the eight dead are five children.

One more person is being treated at a Cape Town hospital for burn wounds while three people escaped without any injuries.

A child has been missing since the incident.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Mohale Ramatseba said that police Search and Rescue members, members of the K9 unit and the local police retrieved more bones from the debris on Monday afternoon.

“It cannot be confirmed at this stage if the remains are that of the missing child.

“Forensic fire investigators and forensic anthropologists are awaited to process the scene,” said Ramatseba.

He added that the identification would be confirmed as soon as the experts had concluded their investigations.

Ramatseba indicated that the cause of the fire is still unknown at this stage.

The Northern Cape MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, Abraham Vosloo, has meanwhile extended his condolences to the family members who lost their lives after sustaining serious injuries from the blaze at Blinkwater Lodge near the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families during this time,” he said.

This was echoed by the board of Northern Cape Tourism.
