A 63-YEAR-old farmer, who is facing a charge of attempted murder after allegedly driving over an EFF official on his farm in Hartswater, will apply for bail in the local magistrate’s court today.

Petrus van Niekerk appeared in court yesterday after he handed himself over to the police on Monday.

He is accused of driving over the deputy secretary of the EFF in Ward 5 in Hartswater, Shimmy Mosienyane, with his bakkie.

According to information, Mosienyane and another man ran onto Van Niekierk’s farm after police had dispersed community members with stun grenades and rubber bullets during a service delivery protest on Friday April 20.

Mosienyane is expected to undergo surgery in the Kimberley Hospital today.

EFF members said that they would picket outside the court again today to highlight the seriousness of the incident and to voice their opposition to the granting of bail to the accused..
