The funeral of the EFF provincial election manager in the Free State, Poka Thabo Lekhu, 45, was held in Ikhutseng in Warrenton yesterday.

THE FUNERAL of the EFF provincial election manager in the Free State, Poka Thabo Lekhu, 45, was held in Ikhutseng in Warrenton on Thursday.

Lekhu was also previously employed as the spokesperson for former Northern Cape Health MEC Dipuo Peters.

EFF provincial secretary Shadrack Thlaole indicated that Lekhu’s death was another big blow for his family after his brother, Rrabatho Lekhu, 42, went missing on April 11 last year in Kimberley and has still not been found.

Rrabatho was last seen after he was apparently dropped off near a car dealership in Du Toitspan Road in Kimberley.

Thlaole said that Lekhu was born in 1975 in Warrenton and graduated from the University of Cape Town.

“He was employed as an election manager for the EFF in the Free State. He had deep knowledge of political ideologies and a sharp insight into EFF policies,” said Thlaole.

He added that Lekhu had died due to Covid-19-related complications in Bloemfontein on November 14.

“The EFF really lost an amazing comrade with vast political experience. He loved the EFF so much that he spent his last days formulating the election strategy for the upcoming local municipal elections in 2021.

“This giant from the Northern Cape represented us well as a provincial migrant to the Free State. He is testimony to the fact that talent and capacity to lead is not scarce in the Northern Cape.”

Thlaole felt that not enough was being done to retain skilled professionals in the Province.

“The current regime isn’t doing enough to keep our great academics, thus most of our people migrate to other provinces for opportunities.”
