Education official in custody for suspected rape of nine-year-old girl

A 56 year old official who is employed at the Department of Education in Springbok is expected to apply for bail next week after he was arrested for allegedly raping a nine year old girl.

A 56-YEAR-old official who is employed at the Department of Education in Springbok is expected to apply for bail next week after he was arrested for allegedly raping a nine-year-old girl.

Captain Olebogeng Tawana said the SAPS Family, Child and Sexual Offences unit in Springbok was investigating the matter.

“It is alleged that the girl’s mother and the accused who is from Nababeep, are family friends. On the day of the incident on May 6 the girl apparently visited the accused and slept over at his residence.”

He added that the accused was arrested on May 11.

“He appeared in the Springbok magistrate’s court on May 12 on a charge of rape. He was remanded in custody, subsequent to his appearance in court on Thursday and is expected to continue with bail application on Tuesday, May 17.”

Spokesperson for the Department of Education Geoffrey van der Merwe said they were aware of the allegations levelled against an employee at the Namakwa district office.

“The department has temporarily discharged this official of all his duties and responsibilities.”

He added that the official had been issued with his precautionary suspension letter on Thursday.

“He will remain on suspension until the investigation is completed, after which further action will be decided upon.”
