An earthquake measuring an aftershock of 5,3 in Buchufontein, sent shockwaves through large parts of the Northern Cape and Western Cape on Sunday morning.
The seismic activity took place about 170 kilometres from Springbok and 400 kilometres from Cape Town.
Council for GeoScience communications manager Mahlatse Mononela stated that the earthquake took place on December 22 at around 2.51am and 5.28am.
“The South African Seismograph Network recorded preliminary results that show that the earthquake registered an aftershock of 5,3 and a local magnitude of 2.9. The epicentre was located 20 kilometres southwest of Buchufontein in the Northern Cape. There were reports of aftershocks that were felt in other parts of the country which are currently being analysed,” she added.
