TWO SUSPECTS who allegedly defrauded the National Lottery Commission (NLC) of over half a million rand were arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit on Wednesday.

Hawks Northern Cape spokesperson Warrant Officer Nomthandazo Mnisi said the suspects, aged 35 and 52 years old, were arrested in Soweto.

“During August 2021, the suspects submitted an application for funding from the NLC on the pretence that they were committee members of a non-profit organisation called ‘Kgatelopele Foundation’. Upon receipt of the fraudulent application, the NLC approved funding to the value of R885,000. The NLC paid R500,000 into the account of the Kgatelopele Foundation as a first tranche,” said Mnisi.

She added that an amount of R380,000 was due to be paid after receipt of a progress report on the projects that, in terms of the fund application, were intended to benefit the Platfontein community in the Northern Cape.

“Both suspects are expected to make their first court appearance before the Kimberley Specialised Commercial Crime Court on August 21. Both suspects are in custody,” Mnisi stated.
