An allegedly drunk police officer who was involved in a motor vehicle accident on the weekend with a marked SAPS vehicle in De Aar has been arrested.
AN ALLEGEDLY drunk police officer who was involved in a motor vehicle accident on the weekend with a marked SAPS vehicle in De Aar has been arrested.
A video of the incident went viral on social media, where the officer, who is dressed in civilian clothes, can be seen lying on the ground. He later stands up on unsteady feet but falls to the ground again, before getting into his vehicle.
Witnesses at the scene, who believed the officer to be extremely drunk, tried to prevent him from getting back behind the wheel.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said that SAPS management was aware of the “unfortunate incident” in De Aar that was trending on social media platforms.
“The implicated police official has been arrested. An internal investigation has also been initiated against the SAPS member. The investigation continues,” said Kock.
